With the duel benefits of having previously raced at Spa and being highly familiar with the teams chosen Audi platform, Richard was an easy pick for the seat. WRT have a rich winning history since their 2009 inception, Lyons will surely be a valuable asset in their bid to claim another Spa 24 hour title to add to their maiden 2014 victory. Their will be a lot to take in and challenges ahead for the Belfast native, the gruelling stints of a 24 hour race through the night being only one of them. Spa, set within the idilic Ardennes forests, is a track to test the very best drivers in the world. It’s famous high speed sections including Blanchimont and the Raidillon and Eau Rouge combination have caught out many a driver, this circuit will always deliver fantastic racing.
With the close working relationship between Lyons and WRT that has been fostered since 2015, Richard now has one of the best chances with WRT to claim a major racing scalp come race day.
“I’m super excited for this challenge to race in one of the biggest endurance events in the world, Spa 24hrs. Spa Francorchamps is a circuit I have had good success on in the past, although I haven’t regularly raced there, it is a track that suits my style.
It’s been a last minute deal, but after having built a relationship with WRT and my team I race with in Japan, Audi Team Hitotsuyama, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. WRT have been collaborating with our team in Super GT since 2015 and during that time we’ve been able to challenge for podiums, wins, and just missed out on Championship honours last season.
Now I get the chance to drive their car at their home race and effectively my home (Europe) race. I will partner with Jon Venter who I have competed with in GT Asia, Josh Caygill and Niki Mayr Melnhof in the #3 car.
I’m going there with a bit to learn and I know that patience is the name of the game in 24hr racing. Looking forward to see how we stack up when the chequered flag comes down!
