Race one for the SRO GT4 America series at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park proved to be a nail biter on Saturday morning, resulting in KTM X-BOW racer Nicolai Elghanayan taking the win over sports car racing veteran Spencer Pumpelly. From start to finish, the two battled hard for the lead position, trading the lead back and forth with almost every lap, putting on a thrilling show for the entirety of the 50 minute sprint race.

The two ran neck and neck during the previous day’s qualifying session, with Pumpelly’s Porsche holding the top spot in the early laps until Elghanayan and the KTM X-Bow set the pole sitting time in lap eight of eleven. Elghanayan led the field to green on Saturday morning, but Pumpelly stayed close and made the pass for the lead about five minutes into the race. A full course caution came out just as Pumpelly took the lead, and less than ten minutes later, the field went back to green and the battle recommenced. Pumpelly and Elghanayan immediately resumed racing side by side, increasing their lead over Michael Cooper’s McLaren and the rest of the field.

With 27 minutes remaining on the race clock, Elghanayan took the lead back, and for the remainder of the race, the two traded position back and forth, expertly maneuvering through the fast, flowing corners to take the coveted lead from the other competitor. The race came down to the final laps, and Elghanayan passed Pumpelly for a final time in Moss Corner and raced to the checker flag, winning over Pumpelly.

“Spencer Pumpelly and I had such an amazing race,” said Elghanayan. “We went back and forth so many times, and we never once made contact. This was the best race I’ve ever had and I’m so happy I was able to have such a great competition with Pumpelly, and I hope to see more of it. I can’t thank everyone at MarcoPolo Motorsports enough for all their hard work this weekend. The car is perfectly suited for this track.”

Elghanayan’s fastest lap in race one sets him up to start in second in race two, next to Pumpelly with the Camaro of Gar Robinson behind. The race two of the sprint weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park gets underway Sunday, May 19 at 4:30PM Eastern, and stream live on the GT World YouTube Channel.
