WEATHERTECH RACING TO START TENTH IN DETROIT

WeatherTech Racing drivers Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Toni Vilander (Kankaanpää, Finland) will start the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix from tenth tomorrow.

MacNeil had the controls of the Scuderia Corsa prepared No. 63 WeatherTech Racing Ferrari for the 15-minute qualifying session. He took the white and black Ferrari out knowing that it wasn’t 100 percent. The crew diagnosed a clutch issue during the latter part of the last practice session but knew they wouldn’t have time to change it prior to qualifying. MacNeil was able to muster a time of 1:31.953 that will have him starting tenth on the grid tomorrow.

“It’s really a shame,” MacNeil said. “We had a clutch issue in free practice two that took us out half way through the session. We had no time to replace it before qualifying. The Scuderia Corsa guys did a great job to ‘band-aide’ it and it lasted about 60 percent of a lap. Then the last four corners I had a lot of wheel spin. If you can’t accelerate you can’t put the power down and go fast to get a good time. The car is one piece. Besides the mechanical issue the WeatherTech Ferrari is handling well. We will get it fixed, get things right in the warm-up then put our heads down and get a result tomorrow.”
